A group of eagles gathered around the lNorth Head Lighthouse at the mouth of the Columbia River. This dramatic river entrance is the first deep harbor north of San Francisco. It is the largest river on the west coast and the crashing waves and unpredictable tides that pound the shore are legendary. Here is some additional information about this lighthouse.

  • Standing on a rocky outcropping at the entrance of the Columbia River, near Ilwaco, Washington.
  • Built in 1898, it rises 65 feet tall but its “focal plane”  is 175 feet above sea level.
  • The lighthouse’s light can be seen from 16 nautical miles away.
  • It was automated in 1961.
  • The surrounding area is Cape Disappointment State Park.
